What is neurosurgery?
Neurosurgery, or neurological surgery, is the surgical subspecialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and cerebrovascular system.
-
What is a neurosurgeon?
A neurosurgeon is a medical doctor who specializes in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of diseases of the nervous system (brain and spine). To become a neurosurgeon in the Philippine setting, a physician undergoes a rigorous 6-year neurosurgery residency training in an institution accredited by the Philippine Board of Neurological Surgery.
Following residency training, neurosurgeons undergo certification in the practice of neurosurgery through the Philippine Board of Neurological Surgery (PBNS). Being a Board Certified Neurosurgeon, also called a Diplomate Philippine Board of Neurological Surgery, is the highest level of neurosurgical qualification in the Philippines.
Certification by the PBNS is based on the applicant’s training qualifications and passage of a written and oral examination that assesses the neurosurgeon’s knowledge, judgement and skill in the diagnosis and management of neurosurgical diseases.
-
What is the difference between a neurologist and a neurosurgeon?
Both are specialists that are trained to treat disorders of the nervous system. They work hand in hand in the management of some neurological diseases but a neurosurgeon can offer a surgical solution to a neurologic disease. A neurologist mainly treats neurologic diseases through medical (non-surgical) means.
-
I have been referred to a neurosurgeon, does it mean I need an operation?
Not necessarily. There are conditions that can be managed conservatively. However, your attending physician likely believes that your condition warrants neurosurgical evaluation and treatment.
-
My patient has a blood clot in the brain, does he need a brain operation?
The need for a brain operation would depend on the size and location of the blood clot and the condition (neurologic status) of the patient.
-
Do neurosurgeons treat spine diseases?
Yes. Neurosurgeons treat spine injuries, remove spine tumors, and operate on spine degenerative diseases
-
What do I need to bring when coming in for consultation?
CT scan and/or MRI films or CDs must be brought including pertinent laboratory results/ medical records in order for us to provide you with a sound neurosurgical assessment.
-
Is there an online consultation platform?
